Weekend sporting joy tinged with sadness
It was a weekend filled with spectacular goals and tears of joy for some but also tears of sorrow for others.

Young African, Mighty Gunners, Civics and Blue Waters fans had the last laugh this weekend following the triumph of their clubs in the MTC Namibia Football Association (NFA) Cup, but it ended in tears for Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United lost their first match of the season at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Namibian rugby was hit with shock and sorrow following the death of a player on Saturday shortly after a match.

MTC NFA Cup
Young African advanced to the semi-final of the MTC NFA Cup after beating Citizens FC 2-0. In other action, Blue Waters defeated Young Brazilians 5-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw, while PSTBET Civics trounced Khuse FC 3-0. Tigers FC lost 2-1 to Mighty Gunners in the other semi-final. Young rugby player dies
FNB Wanderers were left distraught following the sudden death of a popular team member, Edwardo Nell, after a match on Saturday. Nell played at scrumhalf for Wanderers' third team against FNB Unam III in the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) first division at the University of Namibia field. He is reported to have suffered a broken rib, which penetrated his lung and caused internal bleeding. In NRU league action, FNB Western Suburbs beat United 82-7 Trustco United action. Young Gladiators defeated
The Young Gladiators lost 3-0 to Burundi in the FIFA women’s under-20 World Cup qualifiers. The return leg will be in Dobsonville, Johannesburg, on 7 October with the aggregate winner progressing to the third round of the qualifiers.
Cohen victorious in fistball league
Fistball also lived up to expectations after Cohen FC (A) secured the title as they beat SKW 4-0 in sets in the final of the fistball league. Swakopmund Sport Club finished third after beating Cohen (2) 4-1 by sets.
Shalulile does it again
Namibian striker Peter Shalulile did what he is known for after scoring a brace for his club Mamelodi Sundowns in their 2-0 win over Deon Hotto’s Orlando Pirates in the South African DSTV Premiership on Saturday. Maximilian Mbaeva’s Golden Arrows drew 1-1 against Sekhukhune FC, while AmaZulu beat Baroka FC 1-0. Stellenbosch FC secured a 2-1 victory over Chippa United, while SuperSport United snatched a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United.
MTC Netball Premier League comes alive
The MTC Namibia Netball Premier League played at Gobabis over the weekend also produced entertaining performances and results at the Ben van der Walt Primary School. NCS trounced Young Stars 63-24, while Tigers NC beat Rebels 42-33, with Eleven Arrows NC grabbing a 47-32 victory against Golden Girls. Eleven Arrows also beat United 12 45-26 as Golden Girls punished Namibian Navy NC 62-26 in the other match they played on Saturday.
City humbles Chelsea
The English Premier League proved once again why it is regarded as the toughest league in the world following unexpected results at the weekend.
Chelsea - who had appeared to be the best team of the season so far - were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, with Brazilian Gabriel Jesus scoring his first ever goal against Chelsea. The other side of Manchester however experienced a different kind of emotion as Aston Villa beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford. League newcomers Brentford stood firm against Liverpool as the two teams played to a 3-3 draw in an emphatic game. See reactions and other results on Page 4.

The Springboks’ hopes of returning to their winning ways were dashed after a Jordie Barrett penalty late on in the match was enough for New Zealand to salvage a 19-17 victory in Australia.
