Namibian midfield sensation and Alashkert player Wangu Gome has described his first Europa League match as “one to remember and to forget”.

This is after his club, which plays in the Armenian Premier League, failed to progress to the group stages of the Union of European Football Associations (Uefa) Europa League.

Alashkert fell short of a victory and were booted out of the competition after losing 1-0 to Renova in their first qualifying knockout match towards the end of August.

Booked, but solid game

The Namibian had a debut to remember after completing full 90 minutes for his club in the European competition.

The game also saw Gome receiving a yellow card for foul play in a match which saw Nenad Mishkovski scoring the only goal to secure a victory for his side.

“It was a great experience and a dream come true playing in my first Europa competition. “It is a game to remember and to forget in the sense that it was my first ever game at that level but the sad part is that we did not progress to the second knockout stages, which is the last before group encounters.

“It is a challenging competition and we hope that we can do better next time,” Gome said.

Third overall

Alashkert had secured a Europa League spot after finishing third overall with 31 points in the Armenian Premier League. The Europa League is an annual football club competition organised by Uefa since 1971 for eligible European football clubs.

Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.

It is the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the Champions League.

Soldiering on

The 27-year-old further said his biggest wish now will be helping his club win the premier league.

“All we have to do now is to work hard and make sure that we do better in the league than we did last season.

“I am happy here at this club because they are treating me well and that is why I feel I can do more as a player,” Gome noted.

Alashkert's last game in the league was on 13 September when the club lost 2-1 to Urartu.

Gome's side now faces Shirak FC in their next match tomorrow in the Armenian Cup competition.
