Walters appointed acting Ombudsman

President Hage Geingob has appointed incumbent Ombudsman John Walters to act in the position for two months from 1 August to 30 September as per the recommendation of the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC).
A press statement availed to the media this week by the JSC public relations officer Selma Mwaetako said this is caused by the delayed recruitment process of the new Ombudsman.
Walters has been Ombudsman since 1 July 2004 and his initial contract will come to end on 30 July.
The position was advertised by the JSC earlier this year, and interviews for position were supposed to take place on 23 July.
However, one of the shortlisted candidates fell ill, which forced the interviews to be cancelled to allow the candidate enough time to recover.
The new date for the rescheduled interview has not yet been confirmed.
New Ombudsman
Mwaeta said the JSC will now proceed with the finalisation of the recruitment process of the new Ombudsman, who is expected to assume office from 1 October.
Three candidates have been shortlisted for the position, including National Council secretary Tousy Namiseb, lawyer and ex-magistrate Ruth Herunga and Basilius Dyakugha, a legal officer at the Law Reform and Development Commission.
