Twenty-two athletes on Friday benefited from the Special Olympics Namibia Athletes Leadership Programme (ALP) that was held at the Dagbreek School in Klein Windhoek.
The ALP training educated athletes on how to speak with confidence, conduct interviews with the media, manage their money and prepare for fundraising events.
The programme, which is run by current and retired Special Olympic athletes, helps Special Olympic leaders to stay in touch with athletes’ interests, so they can ensure that their programmes remain vital and attractive to the people they serve.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the one-day conference, Special Olympics national director Simon Muinjo said their aim is to promote greater community involvement for young people and adults with intellectual disabilities.
“The Special Olympics Athlete Leadership Programme allows athletes to explore opportunities for greater participation as coaches, officials, team captains, public speaking, advocacy, board and committee members.
“In other words, instead of only taking or receiving services, you will be helping to provide services to others and become a powerful change agent,” he said.
Deon Namiseb, a former ambassador of ALP, encouraged athletes to take the programme seriously as it will promote their personal growth.
“To be a leader is a process and one should go through the athletes’ leadership programme to improve your communication and interaction skills, as that is an important tool that will take you to a lot of places in your life,” said Namiseb.
