Truck driver caught with mandrax tablets

A Namibian truck driver was arrested on Monday at the Ariamsvlei border post for being in possession of 1 014 mandrax tablets to the value of N$121 830.
According to police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the drugs were discovered when a vigilant officer saw the truck driver hiding a plastic bag in nearby bushes before driving his truck through the scanner.
He then went back to collect the bag after being scanned.
The suspect was arrested and investigations continue.
He was found with 858 brown mandrax tablets, three-quarters of a brown tablet, half of a brown tablet and 156 white tablets.
Shikwambi said police chief, Inspector-General Sebastian Ndeitunga, applauds the officer and many others who continue to be vigilant, honest and committed to service delivery.
“The Namibian nation is reminded to retrospect, stop using drugs and together we will kill the market of dangerous substances,” Shikwambi said.
N$2m in drugs
Meanwhile, drugs to the value of more than N$2.166 million was seized in June, while 108 suspects were arrested.
These included 92 Namibians, five Angolans, four Tanzanians and two Zambian nationals. Burundian, South African, Congolese, Nigerian and Ugandan nationals were also arrested.
According to the police, a total of 204 581 kilograms of cannabis, to the value of more than N$2.04 million, as well as 333 mandrax tablets worth N$39 960, 137 grams of cocaine powder worth N$68 500 and 59 units of crack cocaine worth N$5 900 were confiscated during June.
Furthermore, 29 grams of hashish, valued at N$1 450, and 10 grams of crystal methamphetamine, valued at N$5 000, were seized.
