The evolution of DJ Castro
This could be the best Namibian album release of 2019 and if not, it's very close!
Firstly I would like to say that this is an excellent debut album by DJ Castro.
The production is on point and his exciting features were well selected. It's a perfect blend of different worlds; rural, urban, young and old.
This 13-track album officially dropped today but I have had it for a few days now, and this is what I think of it.
From the first time I finished listening to it, I knew if I am home chilling with elders I won't feel the need to mind what is on the stereo. Because yes, I still come from the old school that says you can't blast music with swear words with elders around.
Prior to listening to it I really assumed it was going to be strongly influenced by the Amapiano sound, but on the contrary this album is a mixture of different African sounds.
There's something to behold about artists who make music from a place of honesty as opposed to following a trend or looking for hits.
This is the type of music that finds people and no hype or promotion is needed for it to resonate.
I get excited when Namibian artists make music from a Namibian or African perspective because I feel that's the only way we can play in the international space as opposed to sounding American (think Nigeria and their artists).
This isn't house music but just good music.
The Evolution features Sunny Boy, Lioness, Don Kamati, Pewa, Slickartie, Agogo, Etjo, Jermaine Casper, DJ Dreas and Sally Boss Madam.
My favourite song on the album is Hy Wili Hoori that features Agogo.
I also believe it is the lead single. I pray this album does not end up like one of those albums who's greatness is overshadowed by that lead single (sad if you ask me) because most of the songs on it are very nice and deserve equal attention too.
Besides my favourite, other songs you should look out for include Wapamako featuring Sunny Boy and Lioness, Onyanda and 4 The Fans. Again, when I saw the track list, I assumed Wapamako was going to be a song with up tempo instrumentals judging from the artists featured on the song.
Nonetheless it is a fun song. Lioness's verse was impressive and it is the only rap verse on the entire album. Shining Star featuring Slickartie and Dreams featuring Pewa are other songs that demand to be repeated.
For all my party people, The Rhythm, Whistle and Inuit are the songs you should look forward to on this album. The album is available on iTunes and Antonio's Art.
