The Namibian team that took part in the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 table tennis championships in Lesotho last week performed exceptionally well, according to the Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA).

The tournament took place from 8 to 11 December and consisted of seven different categories - men's and ladies team, singles and doubles events and mixed doubles.

From the onset, it was clear that South Africa was going to dominate proceedings, NTTA secretary Ewan Orlam said in a media statement.

“However, the youthful Namibian team was not intimidated by the big names of the region. Delton Dreyer, Ewan Orlam and Ronaldo Vogel showed great potential, while the experienced Heiko Fleidl made sure that he is taken seriously by his opposition,” Orlam said.

Dreyer, Rudi Saunderson and Fleidl recorded wins, but it was Fleidl who did the best in the singles category by reaching the last 16, before being eliminated.

The young ladies team, with three of the four players being juniors, took the fight to their opponents. Their perseverance paid off when they ended third and claimed the bronze medal in the team competition.

Only South Africa and Botswana could beat the formidable team consisting of Michelle de Koker, Kaitlyn Beukes, Alicia Aebes and Reese Saunderson.

De Koker reached the last 16 in the singles, while Reese Saunderson upset Olorato from Botswana to reach the quarterfinals.

The eventual champion, Musfiquh Kalam from South Africa, eliminated Reese Saunderson.

South Africa were the overall winners of the competition. Namibia will host the Junior AUSC Region 5 championships in March 2020.
