Boxing promoter Nestor ‘Sunshine’ Tobias has appealed to corporate Namibia to join MTC in supporting boxing in order for stables to produce more champions.

Tobias, whose 2022 goal is to continue were they left off in 2021, hopes that the year will also be filled with action-packed boxing bonanzas.

“MTC has been doing the most for boxing and getting additional sponsors this year for boxing will really elevate the development plans.

“Most boxing clubs are developing youngsters and they need money in order for that to happen.

“At our stable, the goal remains the same and that is to become better than we were last year,” Tobias told Namibian Sun.

Development

The academy has produced continental and world champions in the past.

Tobias’s stable currently has national and continental championship belts.

Having set his eyes on grooming more champions, Tobias has expressed confidence in the depth of talent he has in his stable.

Paulinus Ndjolonimus, Charles Shinima, Matheus Heita, Philipus 'Energy' Nghitumbwa and Martin Mukungu are among those at his disposal this year.

“There are also many other upcoming talents that are growing through the ranks from the amateur level.

“That is why I always put emphasis on the aspect of development because these boxers are going to be world champions tomorrow.

“Developing these guys is costly and that is the reason why Namibian stables need the support of corporate Namibia and also to support each other.”

Covid challenges

Just like last year, Tobias expects the Covid-19 pandemic to throw a spanner in the works of many sport events.

He hopes, however, that the pandemic will not prevent them from staging boxing events in towns outside Windhoek.

“We have been all over and we want to do the same this year because we believe in taking boxing to the people.

“Our desires remain the same and we just hope that the invincible enemy will not disrupt us,” Tobias said.
