Simataa Mwiya praises NSFAF
Namibia Sports Commission chief administrator Simataa Mwiya is confident that more sport personnel will receive the necessary education in sport-related fields.

Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) and the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) have signed a memorandum of understating which will enable athletes, officials and employees in the sporting industry to be assisted with study loans over three academic years, starting this year.
The study loans will be allocated to students who demonstrate potential at national, regional, continental and international level.
NSFAF will, through the usual funding requirements, assist students nominated by the NSC to undertake qualifications in various sport disciplines.
Athletes are encouraged to apply for loans before the closing date of 29 February.
Chief administrator of NSC Simataa Mwiya lauded NSFAF for making the deal possible.
“Allow me to express my profound gratitude to NSFAF for according this historic gesture to the NSC.
“Today marks the beginning of a historic occasion where two institutions will symbolically enter in a memorandum of understanding which is a comprehensive framework of collaboration engaging the two organisations and its affiliates.
“This is the very first time that these two organisations join forces in addressing the most pressing educational and professional challenges facing the sport sector,” Mwiya said.
The study loan initiative is open to the field of studies which include sports law, sports management and administration.
Those aspiring to study sports nutrition, sports journalism, sport and recreation management, sports coaching and officiating are also encouraged to apply.
Students who are admitted to the University of Namibia, the Namibia University of Science and Technology and Triumphant College for sport-related fields of study will be considered.
The loan will also apply to those who are admitted at credible regional and international institutions.
Mwiya said the intervention between NSFAF and NSC will initiate mitigating the Namibia National Sport Plan and its objectives, which will ultimately help in the improving of sport management.
The initiative is said to be in line with the strategic vision of the AUSC Region 5, Commonwealth and COSSANAC Sport Conference resolution on enhancing sport leadership management.
The NSC has established a committee comprising of academics, professionals and sport journalist who will, apart from the normal NSFAF application procedures, manage, access and recommend applicants.
Applications will include a selection process with recommendation by the affiliate federation to the committee, who will then submit their recommendations to the NSC for final endorsement.
The NSC will also monitor the progress of the students on the study loan initiative and will have them bonded to render services to the NSC and its affiliates for the period equal to their study funded programme.
“The goal is to enable the study loan holders to play an active role in positive development of sport in societies in which they live at the end of their sporting careers.”
NSFAF acting CEO Kennedy Kandume said he was proud that the institution will cater for aspiring sport personnel.
“We are looking forward to receiving applicants who will benefit through these applications.
“NSFAF will make sure that the dreams of sport-minded Namibians will be fulfilled,” he said.
NSFAF marketing manager Percy Tjahere said students will only be awarded a loan if they have acquired 25 points or more in Grade 12.
“Those who have working experience and are 23 years and older can get a loan through the mature age entry too,” Tjahere added.
