Namibian Paralympics athlete Ananias Shikongo appears to be in line to win big at this year’s Sports Awards, which will take place on 29 October at the Windhoek Country Club.
The nominees for the different categories were announced yesterday.
Shikongo is nominated in the NamPower Sportsman with Disability of the Year category alongside fellow sprinter Johannes Nambala and weightlifter Ruben Soroseb.
While both Nambala and Soroseb were also present at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil, it is expected that Shikongo will walk away with the honours after claiming a gold medal in the T11 200m event.
Added to that, the athlete also won two bronze medals in the T11 100m and 400m events.
He also anchored the 4x100m Paralympics relay team that ended fourth in Brazil. The relay team is also nominated, in the Team of the Year category.
Shikongo also claimed three gold medals at last year’s All-Africa Games as well as a silver medal at the IPC World Championships.
Nambala also had a great year after claiming two silver medals at the 2016 Paralympic Games in addition to gold collected at the All Africa Games.
Although Shikongo’s gold medal win at the global spectacle gives him the edge for this year’s honour, the younger Nambala, who is 25 years old, looks certain to be a future winner.
Tickets for the glamorous event are selling at N$500 per person while companies can show their support by buying a table for N$15 000.
