Sea cargo pushed volumes in September
Namibia transported 1 257 364 tonnes of cargo compared to 1 052 427 tonnes and 1 249 640 tonnes that were transported in August 2021 and September 2020.

Cargo transported through sea mainly dominated by consignments of frozen fish, zinc concentrate and imports of goods mainly of petroleum oil, sulphuric acid and copper concentrate was the main driver of the transport composite index in September 2021.
According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) transport sectoral report, Namibia transported 1 257 364 tonnes of cargo through rail, road, air and sea, compared to 1 052 427 tonnes and 1 249 640 tonnes that were transported in August 2021 and September 2020, respectively.
The sea cargo index that consists of sea-landed, sea-shipped and sea trans-shipped recorded an increase of 36.0% month-on-month, a slowdown from a growth of 38.6% registered in August 2021. On the other hand, the index declined by registering a marginal reduction of 0.8% over the year.
The total volume of cargo transported by sea in September 2021 amounted to 775 982 tonnes compared to 570 648 tonnes recorded in the preceding month. Whereas, the total volume of cargo transported by sea for September 2020 stood at 782 548 tonnes, NSA added.
In addition, the air cargo index registered a monthly increase of 4.3% in September 2021 compared to a reduction of 34.0% recorded in August 2021. While, on an annual basis, the index increased by 71.3% from a reduction of 62.0% in September 2020.
The increase recorded on monthly basis were mainly reflected on high volume of consignments of fresh fish or chilled, fresh and other fruits, vaccines and toxins, printed books, brochures and leaflets products transported via air cargo, NSA pointed out.
Road
Moreover, the road cargo index registered a monthly growth of 3.0% in September 2021 lower than a growth of 13.6% recorded for August 2021. Furthermore, the index increased by 21.4%, year on year, upward, when compared to a contraction of 12.5% recorded in September 2020.
The increase recorded on monthly basis is mainly attributed to high volumes of predominantly petroleum oils, frozen fish, salt and pure sodium chloride and beer made from malt transported via road cargo.
Lastly, the rail cargo index for September 2021 declined by 8.1% month-on-month compared to a growth of 20.9% registered in August 2021. Similarly, the rail cargo index declined by 28.4%, year on year compared to a growth of 19.6% recorded in September 2020.
The decline recorded on monthly basis is mainly attributed to low volume of earth, ash, gravel, cement and manganese items transported through rail cargo.
Overall, the transport composite cargo index recorded an increase on a monthly basis of 19.5% in September 2021 compared to a growth of 27.0% registered in August 2021, NSA said.
