Finance minister Calle Schlettwein attended the 27th Africa-French summit in Bamako, Mali, on 14 and 15 January.

President Geingob delegated Schlettwein to represent him at this important event, which was attended by various African heads of state and government.

The summit was aimed at strengthening ties between African countries and France.

The summit, under the theme ‘Partnership, Peace and Emergence’, was preceded by a meeting of foreign affairs ministers.

The ministers’ meeting was followed by a banquet hosted by Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

The agenda of the summit mainly hinged on peace and security, terrorism, migration, cyber-crime, human and drug trafficking, among other issues affecting France and the African continent.

President Keita and French President Francois Hollande co-chaired the official opening of the summit on Sunday.

The summit was also attended by representatives from the European Union, African Union, United Nations, African Development Bank, World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

A report by ECOWAS on Gambia following elections in that country was presented to the summit.

It adopted a declaration on the challenges and threats to peace, economy and development.

Schlettwein was accompanied by Peya Mushelenga, deputy minister of international relations and cooperation; Tuliameni Kalomoh, special advisor to the minister of international relations and cooperation; Frieda Ithete, Namibian ambassador to France; and Trudie Amulungu, ambassador to Senegal.
