Rundu council staff ditch Napwu for PSUN

RUNDU
A number of Rundu town council staff members have resigned from the Namibia Public Workers Union (Napwu) to join the Public Service Union of Namibia (PSUN), which now has majority representation at the local authority.
This according to a letter seen by Namibian Sun from Rundu CEO, Olavi Nathanael, to Napwu general-secretary, Petrus Nevonga, dated 25 August in which the council served the union three months’ notice.
Napwu has until 24 November to gain 50% plus one membership of council staff or else its recognition agreement will be terminated. By 1 August, the union only had 40% membership.
The town council employs about 155 people, 79 of whom are currently registered with PSUN while Napwu has a mere 45 members.
Wait and see
Namibian Sun understands that not all members who joined PSUN jumped ship from Napwu as some previously had no representation.
Attempts to get comment from Nevonga on the matter proved futile.
Meanwhile, PSUN president Pauli Titus Sitentu confirmed that the union has a majority representation at the council.
“What I can confirm is that we have successfully recruited employees of the Rundu town council and we await what happens between now and three months,” he said.
