Robbery attempt on police foiled

Ogone Tlhage
A robbery suspect paid with his life for a failed attempt to rob three undercover police officers in Windhoek's northern industrial area near the Van Eck power station on Friday.

Police spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi says one suspect was shot dead, another was arrested and the third fled the scene.

The third suspect is still on the run and the police are appealing to the public to help bring him to book.

“At about 14:30 on Friday afternoon, the suspected armed robbers attempted to attack the undercover officers who were seated in an unmarked police vehicle. The officers reacted by firing a warning shot to deter the suspects and disarm them but the suspects aggressively persisted, coming on the officers with intention to injure them,” Shikwambi said yesterday.

“As a last resort the officers fired shots whereby one was killed, one injured while the third managed to run away. The injured (36) has been taken to Katutura Hospital in a stable condition.

The deceased is identified as Kasie, an adult Namibian male who was a wanted person in a robbery with aggravating circumstances case. The deceased's identity cannot be revealed as the next of kin is not yet informed,” she said.

Police investigations into the matter continue.

People with information that would lead to the arrest of the third suspect are advised to contact Deputy Commissioner Abner Agas.

“The police are requesting anyone who has information that will lead to the arrest of the third suspect to contact the nearest police station or Deputy Commissioner Agas on 081 124 2692. Members of the public should not try to apprehend the suspect as he is regarded dangerous.”

In another incident, two security guards allegedly stole two government vehicles from a government garage they were guarding at Opuwo in the Kunene Region.

The two guards allegedly drove the vehicles to Oshakati, where one of the two stolen vehicles was found. The guards are yet to be arrested.
