Rape accused City cop back at work

Windhoek City Police spokesperson Fabian Amukwelele, who was released on bail last week after being charged with rape, is back at work.
City Police chief Abraham Kanime confirmed to Namibian Sun that Amukwelele returned to work on Monday.
Amukwelele, who is charged with the rape of a City of Windhoek colleague, was released on N$7 000 bail with several conditions imposed by the court. Kanime said there will be an internal inquiry and only then a decision will be taken on what further action or steps need to be taken.
Amukwelele testified in court that he is a constable in the City Police and is employed as its public relations officer.
At the time of his arrest, he was an acting sergeant.
Case details
The 37-year-old Amukwelele was arrested on 9 April after he was accused of raping his 29-year-old colleague.
His colleague fell pregnant afterwards, but has since terminated the pregnancy.
The rape charge stems from an incident that occurred on 11 January at Amukwelele's Rocky Crest home.
He has maintained the sex was consensual.
He is prohibited from contacting the complainant directly or indirectly until the finalisation of the matter, and is also prohibited from coming within 100 metres of her residence and place of employment.
He may not interfere with police investigations and State witnesses, and may not comment on the matter, which has been postponed until 3 August, on any social media platform.
