Over a million in June drug haul
In June the Namibian police arrested a total of 117 suspects on drug-related charges including 97 Namibians, and seized various types of illicit drugs to the value of more than N$1.3 million.
In a statement, Namibian police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi said apart from the 97 Namibians, among those arrested were six Angolans, three from Burundi, eight Congolese nationals, two Zambians and one Tanzanian national.
Kanguatjivi announced that among the cannabis, cocaine, mandrax and other drugs seized, the police confiscated 27 “abortion tablets” with an estimated value of N$13 500.
Of the other illicit stashes of drugs seized by the police, was 74.8 kg of cannabis with an estimated value of close to N$748 000.
The police also seized nearly 1 kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of nearly N$459 000, in addition to “seven bullets” of cocaine with an estimated value of N$24 500. A total of 115 units of crack cocaine were confiscated with a value of N$11 500. The police also confiscated 21 grams of cannabis plants valued at N$210.
Moreover, several drug busts led to the seizure of 405 mandrax tablets valued at N$48 600.
In March, the police announced they seized drugs worth over N$2 million and arrested 89 suspects in connection with the crimes during that month.
In April, drugs valued at close to N$5.4 million were seized, and 99 suspects arrested in connection with drug related crimes.
In May, 176 suspects were taken into custody in connection with the possession of illicit drugs worth N$1.1 million. On Friday, police in the
//Karas region dispatched drugs valued at an estimated total of N$9 million in a fire.
Nampa reported the drugs consisted from drug seizures conducted as early as 1994.
The crime investigations coordinator for the region, Deputy Commissioner Chrispin Mubebo told the media the drugs burnt on Friday consisted of cannabis, mandrax and cocaine.
“These drugs that are being burned here are of cases that were finalised in court and those responsible were convicted and date from 1994 to 2016,” he said.
He explained that as per set procedures, the exhibits can only be disposed of after a case is finalised and the convicted person has spent at least a year in prison as the person can appeal within a year and those drugs or exhibits should then be present before court.
He noted that most of those convicted are young women and men.
Mubebo urged the public to report all those selling drugs as bringing them to book will contribute to the wellbeing of the community.
The drugs were destroyed at the Keetmanshoop state hospital incinerator.
In December last year, the police arrested a South African man with cannabis worth N$ 2.4 million, which it said was the biggest bust in the region.
In April this year, police arrested five men along the road between Keetmanshoop and Tses with cannabis worth N$ 1.8 million.
