Oniimwandi remembers Iyambo
The community of Oniimwandi in the Onayena constituency of the Oshikoto Region is proud to have raised a political stalwart such as the late Nickey Iyambo, the first vice-president of the Republic of Namibia.
In a statement on behalf of the community during Iyambo's memorial service on Saturday, the senior headman of the Oniimwandi Traditional District of the Ondonga Traditional Authority, Naeman Amalwa, said Iyambo was a peaceful and humble person who assisted in the development of Oniimwandi.
Iyambo died in Windhoek on 19 May at the age of 83. His first memorial service was held at Oniimwandi on Saturday.
President Hage Geingob honoured Iyambo with a hero's funeral that will take place at the National Heroes Acre in Windhoek on Saturday, 1 June.
Iyambo served as the first vice-president of Namibia from 2015 until his resignation due to ill health in February 2018.
Iyambo had been a cabinet minister since independence and served as the minister of health and social services from 1990 to 1996.
He became the minister of regional and local government and housing from 1996 until 2002, before serving as minister of mines and energy from 2002 until 2005.
Iyambo also served as minister of agriculture, water and forestry from 2005 until 2008, minister of safety and security from 2008 until 2010 and then as minister of veterans' affairs since 2010.
“We as the community of Oniimwandi are proud to have produced such a giant ... of the Namibian government and Swapo leadership to become the first vice-president of our country. In Oniimwandi we knew Iyambo as a peaceful and humble person,” Amalwa said.
“He could treat everyone equally and we honour him for all the good things he did for the Oniimwandi village and the country.”
Amalwa urged residents of Oniimwandi to inherit the spirit of peace, hard work and selflessness embodied by the late Iyambo.
