The organiser of the Okapya Annual tournament, Sandro Ithana, has heaped praise on how the teams played during the festive season.

Ithana, who has already commenced with plans to host yet another tournament in December 2022, reflected on the quality of the matches, which he says served as a motivation for him to continue with the tournament this year.

“The quality for me was very important because the teams showed that there is talent in tournaments of such nature.

“As we start planning for December 2020 already, I would like to thank everyone who made last year’s tourney possible.

“Everything went well and that is a huge source of encouragement we can take into 2022,” Ithana said.

Ithana further lauded Coca-Cola, Top Score, John Endjala Investments, Okapya Liner Transport and Namibia Private Ambulance Services for their involvement in sponsoring the competition.

He also thanked G2G Group, Visible Communication Printing and Designs, Otb Sports, Ekamuti Lodge, Energy 100 FM, Mshasho Records, Piyet Services, Atai Investments, Omaalala Investment, Kashipu Investment CC, Akindaba Style, Onambula Investment Group and Star Comets who was made it possible.

The tournament, which is in its third year, is normally played at the Eleven Morning Stars sport field near Andimba Ya Toivo Airport in Ondangwa.

“This tournament was founded with the aim of bringing people together during festive season because we believe this is the only way we can reduce crime during the festive season by keeping them busy with sport.

“It’s also a platform for SMEs to showcase their businesses and on the other hand to keep players active since there is no football in the country.”

The 2021 edition attracted 28 teams (21 youth and seven veteran teams).

“One of the biggest highlights was that the tournaments attracted three teams from Windhoek and not only local teams as usual, which is a good indication that tournament is growing,” Ithana said.
