Although Namibians experienced an unusually chilly weekend, hot conditions are expected for most of October and the first part of November.

This is according to the latest weather outlook by climatologist Johan van den Berg of Santam South Africa.

Namibia Meteorological Service weather forecaster Odilo Kgobetsi told Namibian Sun that cooler temperatures over the weekend were due to a frontal system that moved over Cape Town affecting southern and western parts of Namibia, but that temperatures will be warming up again today.

He added that these cold conditions are unusual for this time of year.

Rain outlook

Meanwhile, Van den Berg says that little rain is expected in Namibia this month and in the first part of November.

“Outlooks for rain improve from the second part of November,” he says.

He says forecasts are showing increasing probabilities for the development of a full-scale La Niña event.

According to him, the likelihood of La Niña increased from just shy of 50% in July to between 70% and 80% currently.

“The current outlook represents a moderate to strong La Niña.”

The current strengthening of La Niña is significant because the months of September and October are very important to set the trend for the rest of the rainy season.

Van den Berg says it is therefore very likely that the La Niña will remain to influence weather systems until at least March 2022.
