NYS hosts fourth graduation ceremony
Now providing nationally recognised technical and vocational education

On 8 October, the National Youth Service (NYS) held its fourth Technical Vocation and Education Training (TVET) graduation ceremony at the Rietfontein training centre.
A total of 218 students, who received training in various technical and vocational fields over the last four years, were recognised and rewarded for their efforts with qualifications at Namibia Qualification Authority (NQA) level three in various trades.
NYS now provides nationally recognised TVET as well as personal development programmes.
According to Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, TVET is a critical provider of skills, knowledge and technology required to drive productivity in a knowledge-based economy because it provides young people with work-ready skills that are useful in addressing the challenges of youth unemployment.
“Young people need skills that meet the demands of the private sector, both to find jobs and to create their own businesses. Thus, TVET should not be seen to be an option for those who do not qualify for university admission, but should take a leading role in our post-matric education,” she said.
She went on to say that the revised policy focuses on transforming TVET into a vehicle for inclusive, sustainable economic growth by fostering employability and entrepreneurship. As a result, TVET plays an important role in human capacity and socio-economic development, and it is critical to technological progress, wealth creation, poverty alleviation, job creation, and long-term growth.
Mbapewa Kauraere, one of the trainees who attained overall best performer in hair dressing and cosmetology, expressed her excitement as her dream of owning a hair salon is about to come true.
"I have always wanted to own a beauty salon since I enrolled at NYS, and now that I have obtained this qualification, I will look for funding to help me open a salon and train other Namibians in this trade with the skills I have acquired," she said.
Agnes Tjongarero, minister of sport, youth and national service, praised NYS for its dedication and congratulated the graduates on their accomplishment.
