Brave Warriors and Blackburn Rovers right-back Ryan Nyambe, who last played for the country in Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), is expected to join the rest of the team today, according to interim coach Bobby Samaria.
The Warriors are plotting an away win against Mali in their first leg qualifier match on Friday.
Nyambe is held in high regard in local football circles as well as internationally for his club Rovers, a second tier English football club.
It is hoped that he will make a significant contribution to the senior men’s football side in their quest to qualify for the Afcon competition.
Adding depth
Nyambe made his international debut for Namibia against Ghana on 9 June 2019 in Dubai. On 23 June 2019, he made his competitive debut for Namibia in the first round of the Afcon group stages against Morocco.
While the match ended in a 0–1 defeat, the footballer was credited as having a man-of-the-match performance. He further played against South Africa and Ivory Coast, earning him four caps for the Land of the Brave.
The 22-year old Nyambe has the quality to dissect opponents along with resilience and adds experience and maturity the Warriors needs at the back.
Left-back Riaan Hanamub said he learns a lot from Nyambe, who plays at a much more advanced stage.
“He is very good when it comes to positioning, movement on and off the ball. So, his presence in the team really added depth,” he said.
Bringing in the troops
Other foreign based players such as Petrus Shitembi (Malaysia) and Wangu Gome (Armenia) are expected to arrive soon as well.
The travelling squad will be announced this week. The return leg is set for 17 November at 17:00 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
Due to Covid-19 regulations, no spectators will be allowed in the venue.
The training squad consists of:
