NTA tennis league concludes on a high
The 2017 First National Bank (FNB) Schools National Tennis League tournament took place on Saturday at the Central Tennis Courts in Windhoek.
The tournament, which caters for the top three tennis-playing schools in all 14 regions of Namibia, only saw participants from Erongo, Okahandja and Windhoek taking part.
The Namibia Tennis Association's (NTA) schools coordinator, Samuel Pretorius van Wyk, told Nampa financial difficulties prevented other regions from participating.
“We invited all regions for the under-10, -12 and -14 age groups. This tournament is a platform for beginners to compete amongst themselves. It allows kids to grasp the basics of tennis as a sport at an early age,” he said.
Van Wyk said the lack of funds also affected their other development programmes in the regions, which include training teachers to be tennis coaches and giving away equipment.
“We receive equipment from the International Tennis Federation which we must give to the schools in the regions. We then identify the talented kids, whom we bring out to the national centre for further training,” he added.
He said currently, they only have FNB as sponsor and called on other companies to come on board and develop tennis in Namibia.
The tournament saw Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (WAP) emerge as winners in the under-10 boys' section after amassing 42 points.
They were followed by Walvis Bay Primary School who picked up 30 points, while Hermann Gmeiner Primary School came third with 21 points.
In the girls' under-10 group, WAP was first with 30 points, while Hermann Gmeiner PS was second with 21 points and Walvis Bay PS third on 18 points.
In the under-12 boys' section, Mandume Primary School came out tops on 42 points followed by Hermann Gmeiner PS and Walvis Bay PS with 30 points.
The girls from Hermann Gmeiner topped the under-12 group on 18 points followed by Mandume PS and Suiderhof PS with nine points apiece.
Dagbreek Primary School won the boys' under-14 category with 18 points, followed by Suiderhof PS with 12 points and Klein Professor Private School with nine points.
All winners won trophies sponsored by FNB.
The next tournament organised by the NTA will be the National Masters Tournament, scheduled for Saturday at the Central Tennis Courts.
