NSC puts moratorium on all sporting activities
The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) this week suspended all sporting activities, including formal and informal games, as a measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus.
A media statement issued on Monday said, following the decree issued by President Hage Geingob last Saturday on precautionary measures taken by the health authorities to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, NSC in consultation with the sport ministry took the decision to place a moratorium on all sporting events in the country.
The moratorium applies to all domestic, regional and international sporting events that were to be hosted in Namibia as well as international participation.
“These include training, entertainment and social sporting events that involve gathering of people, and will be observed for 30 days effective immediately, until at least 14 April. All sporting events that were approved are now suspended with this notification in a bid to help prevent further opportunities and spread of the coronavirus,” the statement read.
NSC individual athletes may still train on their own, provided they take precautionary measures.
NSC further said it wished to appeal to all affiliate sporting federations and umbrella bodies to suspend all non-essential activities such as annual general meetings, training ground visits, fan meetings and team sports training.
“This decision should not be taken lightly. Affiliates and all sport-related activities, be it private or public institutions, must consider the wellbeing of players, staff and supporters while acknowledging government's national efforts in tackling this outbreak. The NSC, together with our key stakeholders, will continue to update the sporting fraternity on developments in this regard,” it said.
The announcement follows that of other sporting activities suspended since Saturday.
This includes the Katutura Sports Union Independence Cup, the Sanlam Coastal Marathon, the Independence Boxing Bonanza, the Namibia Hockey Union Indoor League, the Khomas Basketball Association Independence Trophy and the Galz & Goals programme activities.
Cricket Namibia also announced the postponement of the 25 March to 1 April series between Namibia and the Netherlands.
