The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) and the Namibia National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association (NNOC-CGA) have distanced themselves from a new body allegedly organising gymnastics in the country.
The NSC saw an advert in a newspaper regarding a body called Namibia Gymnastics, which reportedly planned to host events in the country.
The sports commission also said the new entity wrote to region five members about their existence.
The NSC condemned Namibia Gymnastics, adding that it was not recognised.
Namibian Sun understands that the new body has also been organising events and communicating on international platforms as legitimate registered entity.
At a joint press conference, the NNOC-CGA and NSC condemned these actions.
Distancing themselves
“NSC hereby distances itself from the communique that is in circulation within the gymnastics family of a body having assertions to be an affiliate member of both NSC and NNOC-CGA,” the NSC wrote in a statement.
The commission added that the Namibian Sport Act 12 of 2003 states that “a sports body which wishes to register as a national sports body or national umbrella must apply to the commission for registration in the form and manner as prescribed”, which Namibia Gymnastics has not done.
However, the NNOC -CGA and NSC assured the public that the Namibia Gymnastics Federation (NGF) is a registered member.
Infighting
With regards to the NGF, the NNOC and NSC appointed an interim committee in August 2020, replacing the old executive, which is said to have been causing infighting within the federation.
Due to non-compliance, the operations of the NGF have been placed under an interim committee until such time an extraordinary elective general meeting is held, the bodies said.
They further appealed to affiliate club members of the NGF and other stakeholders to continue to render the necessary support to the interim committee.
“Since the appointment of the interim committee last year, we have been very happy that the operations have continued.
“We want them to elect a new committee by March,” NSC chief administrator Freddy Mwiya said.
