The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) has issued a list of non-contact sports that can resume training during stage two of the national coronavirus state of emergency.
These include athletics, archery, chess, cricket, cycling, swimming, golf, gymnastics and motorsport.
In a media statement, the NSC said as the regulatory authority of sport in the country, it will allow certain sport codes to resume training under strict measures such as not sharing training equipment, disinfecting sports facilities, hand sanitising and maintaining social distancing.
The NSC said even though government regulations say people should maintain a distance of one metre from each other, it recommends a distance of two metres due to the nature of some sports codes.
No physical contact
Athletes should avoid any physical contact and use clean towels at all times, while no spectators are allowed inside any sports facilities, it said.
“It is the responsibility of the executives and secretary-generals of each federation or umbrella body to ensure compliance to these regulations, as you will be required to submit a reporting template to the commission on the progress and challenges faced during stage two of the lockdown,” NSC chief administrator Freddy Mwiya said.
The report will be helpful to central government for assessments and will be used in future considerations of what sporting activities will be allowed depending on the prevailing circumstances at the time.
Attendance list required
“Also keep an attendance list as it will be required for follow-ups, tracing and monitoring of suspected Covid-19 cases,” he added.
Mwiya said the NSC, in collaboration with the sports ministry and law enforcement agencies, will be conducting regular inspections to monitor and ensure adherence to the approved regulations.
