The organisers of the annual Harders Cup at Lüderitz have confirmed that the tournament will not take place this year unless an anchor sponsor comes on board.

Harders Cup’s executive chairperson and founder Tim Ekandjo said they had a three-year commitment for the event, which ended in 2019.

“We have succeeded in hosting this event successfully for three years. I’m aware that so many people would love to see the event continue but one can only do so when an anchor sponsor comes on board. For the last three years, we had in excess of N$250 000 every year in terms of a budget shortfall,” Ekandjo explained.

He said that was not fair to teams and suppliers as they always had to wait for their money when the organisers could not pay on time.

On suggestions that the football event should be merged with the Crayfish Festival, Ekandjo said that would not be a good idea.

“The Crayfish Festival is a longstanding event and my view is that it has a lot of entertainment value on its own. It is good to spread out activities so that people have two events to look forward to as opposed to merging two events in one weekend,” he said.

Ekandjo said the annual budget for the tournament was N$1.3 million and it was always difficult to raise such an amount to hold a successful tournament.

“The Harders Cup event was a commitment for three years and I wish to personally thank all those who were involved in this noble event for making it the success it was. I know it will forever be remembered as one of the best and most exciting events Lüderitz has ever had,” Ekandjo said.

Launched in 2017, the Harders Cup was an annual football tournament which afforded the youth of the coastal town an opportunity to display their talent and skills.
