Ngurare to join agri ministry as director
Former Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) secretary Dr Elijah Ngurare has resigned from his job at the University of Namibia (Unam) to join the ministry of agriculture as director for rural water supply and sanitation coordination.
He has been quality assurance coordinator at Unam's Hifikepunye Pohamba and Jose Eduardo Dos Santos campuses - both at Ongwediva - since 2016. Ngurare holds a Bachelor of Science degree in water resources management and international relations from the Central State University, USA, a Master of Law degree from the University of Dundee, Scotland, and a PhD from the National University of Ireland, Cork, in the Republic of Ireland.
It is his water resources qualification that had him appointed to the NamWater board of directors years back by then agriculture minister John Mutorwa.
But after a turbulent political career in recent years, punctuated by his expulsion together with three others from Swapo in 2015, he lost several directorships on companies owned by government, including being chairman of the Namdeb board.
He also lost his director positions in companies owned by the ruling party, such as Kalahari Holdings and some of its subsidiaries, such as Multichoice Namibia. This happened as factions within the party sharpened their daggers to hunt down perceived enemies.
Alongside the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) trio of Job Amupanda, Dimbulukeni Nauyoma and George Kambala, Ngurare was expelled from Swapo as they were deemed divisive loose cannons who had no respect for the party's leadership, let alone its internal unity.
They challenged their expulsion in the High Court where Acting Judge Collins Parker set aside the suspension and ordered their reinstatement.
Ngurare yesterday would neither confirm nor deny his new appointment, but Namibian Sun has it on good authority that Unam vice-chancellor Professor Kenneth Matengu has already sent out an email to staff in which he bade his farewell to the departing colleague.
His appointment at the agriculture ministry is effective from 1 March.
