The new year was welcomed with widespread rains across the country as tropical storm Chalane headed towards Namibia over the weekend.

Weather forecaster Odilo Kgobetsi last week issued a warning that more than 50 mm of rain could be expected over the northern, central and eastern regions at a time, adding that flash floods were also likely from 31 December to 2 January.

The areas where heavy rains were expected included the Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions, the two Kavango regions, the Otjozondjupa, Khomas, Omaheke and Hardap regions as well as the southern parts of //Karas.

Meanwhile, the Namibian Meteorological Services has warned that widespread thundershowers can still be expected in Kavango East, Kavango West and Hardap today, and necessary precautions should be taken.
