Nedbank Cycle Challenge geared for weekend
Belgian road cyclist Victor Campenaerts will join hundreds of cyclist for the Nedbank Cycle Challenge, which will take place this weekend in Windhoek.
The number of entries is still undetermined, however, it is expected that just over 1 000 enthusiastic cyclists will be at the starting line on Sunday to take on the 20, 30, 60 and elite 100km distances.
Namibian cyclist Dan Craven, who won last year's race in Nedbank colours, will once again compete. Craven won Namibia a spot at the Olympics when he finished eighth overall at the African Cycling Championships last year, and expects the race to be an exciting one.
“This year is going to be particularly exciting as the NCC is the second of four Olympic selection races, which will decide which male road cyclist gets to represent Namibia at the Tokyo Olympics. I'm one of the riders gunning for the spot so I know we have a fierce and fast race ahead of us,” Craven said.
The Mountain Bike Challenge will take place on Saturday, 15 February, at the Waldorf School in Avis, and will start at 07:00. The Nedbank Kidz Challenge will also take place at the same venue and will start at 08:30. This particular race has developed into an event in its own right with 200 youngsters expected to take part.
Registration for the mountain bike and road races will take place today from 16:00 to 18:00 at the Waldorf School in Avis. Registration for the Kidz Race will take place on Saturday at Waldorf between 07:00 and 08:00. There will be additional registration for the road challenge on Saturday at Zoo Park from 16:00 to 18:00.
The Nedbank Cycle Challenge is held in partnership with the Namibia Health Plan and Coco-Cola and is supported by the Namibian Cycling Federation, Windhoek Pedal Power, Rock & Rut Mountain Bike, the Today Group and Events Unlimited.
