Namibians develop a taste for fish
RUNDU – Namibians now consume about 13 kg of fish per person per year, compared to 8 kg per person three years ago.
This is according to the minister of fisheries and marine resources, Bernard Esau.
Speaking at a gala dinner held by the National Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) at Nkurenkuru on Thursday, Esau said he takes the issue of ensuring that Namibians have access to fish for domestic consumption seriously.
“This is why I have made a commitment to increase national fish consumption to the world average of 20.4 kg per person per year during this financial year.”
He said he has instructed officials at the ministry, and also NFCPT, to ensure that this target is realised.
Namibia must have access to its own fish for local consumption, in addition to trading it internationally.
The trust has established fish shops in 12 of the 14 regions and distributed about 6 500 metric tonnes of fish annually through these outlets.
