The Namibia national junior karate team secured three bronze medals at the African Junior Karate Championships to finish 11th out of 23 countries.

The event took place from 11 to 13 July in Gaborone, Botswana.

A media statement issued Thursday by Namibia Karate Union spokesperson Stefan van der Merwe said a larger squad of athletes was selected which included the senior team, but due to unforeseen circumstances many had to withdraw.

Head coach Llewellyn Manale expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, saying his players put up a stellar performance against great and experienced performers at the high-level karate championship.

“There were many outstanding performances for such a young team, we had a few setbacks and stiff competition at the event, but Team Namibia is an ever-growing team. It's time to face the challenges ahead and become a fierce force to be reckoned with, there is definitely a bright future for all our karate out there, we have already started stepping up,” said Manale.

He said the team is no longer going to championship tournaments to just make up the numbers but goes there to compete for medals and it is a step in the right direction, thus he is proud of what they have achieved and excited about what the future holds.

The team was led by Namibia Karate Union president Cornelius D'Alton, with Leonard Martin as team manager and Namibian karate officials Wikus Oberholster as chief referee and Gert Husselmann and Theresa Swart as referees and judges.
