Wherever you are in the country and whichever daily you read, the newspaper you are holding in your hands today was delivered by the Namibia Distribution Hub - a new joint venture aimed at helping to ensure the survival of all local print media.
Delivering the New Era (on selected routes), The Namibian, Allgemeine Zeitung, Republikein and Namibian Sun, this consolidated platform will strengthen all these brands, ensuring that each publication is delivered to distribution points earlier, and by a party that has the interests of print media at heart.
Delivering these newspapers is a brand-new fleet, each equipped with specifically created trolleys developed for ease of use. Moreover, this system saves time and money when it comes to deliveries.
According to distribution manager Ettienne Kotze, this solution should was developed a long time ago.
“In the past, newspapers would often be transported by third parties as incidentals and packed in disarray. The challenge would then be to find the correct batch and the right newspapers to be delivered to the client - an often time-consuming process.”
Quick and easy
“With the new system, each batch of newspapers is placed in the correct trolley, which is simply wheeled into the delivery vehicle.
Once at the destination, it is a matter of minutes to off-load the order, and in an orderly fashion,” he said.
However, it is not only the delivery process that is much quicker.
As soon as the newspapers have been printed and packaged, each parcel goes directly into its designated trolley, which is already marked with the correct route, drop-off points and distribution agents, and thus handling is minimised, Kotze said.
“Our agents are very pleased about the order that has been created and the amount of time saved to serve clients.”
Besides New Era and Namibia Media Holdings (NMH) dailies, which are printed and distributed from the NewsPrint premises in Lafrenz, other publications transported by the Namibia Distribution Hub include NMH publications Tourismus, Die Boer/The Farmer and focused editions, as well as Game, Shoprite U-Save, HiFi Corporation, Dischem and Agra brochures.
The Namibian, which is printed by WordPress, is delivered to NewsPrint every night, where it is also loaded into the trolleys and delivery vehicles for distribution.
Serving the nation
Kotze said each delivery vehicle can transport up to 32 000 newspapers (of 32 pages each). Currently, each van carries between 23 000 and 25 000 newspapers every night.
“And then we haven't even hooked our nifty trailer yet,” he said, adding that the trailer will assist in delivering even more newspapers just as quickly, and is destined to serve the north-west of the country up to Opuwo.
“As Namibian Distribution Hub's slogan reads, 'Namibia belongs to those who read', and this initiative is to help ensure that we continue to serve the Namibian nation with information, cost-effectively and on time to all four corners of Namibia,” he said.
