Managing Director (MD) of Nedbank Namibia, Martha Murorua, will carry the responsibility as chair of the Bankers Association of Namibia (BAN), effective 1st May.

This position rotates annually amongst the heads of the five current commercial banks in Namibia.

Murorua, who takes over from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Letshego Bank Namibia, Ester Kali, says it is an honour to represent and champion an industry that is so important to the growth of the economy and the well-being of communities.

“Nedbank looks forward to advocating for our industry, and we foster the importance of inclusivity and financial literacy in Namibia. These are difficult and unpredictable times, yet we have seen financial institutions lean in to assist their clients and consumers in navigating the current economic climate. The passion and determination with which they serve their customers and communities are inspiring,” Murorua said.

She also applauded the predecessors who laid the foundational work for the past 24 years.

The Bankers’ Association of Namibia was established in 1997, in accordance with the Banking Institutions Act, as the representative trade association for the commercial banking sector in the country. Their overarching objective is to provide a forum for considering policy matters impacting the Namibian banking industry and for member banks to discuss common concerns and issues. In addition, through the BAN, members deal with non-competitive issues that are of common interest and of significance to the banking industry in Namibia.

The new chair added: “It is important for the spirit of teamwork to continue amongst ourselves, because as much as healthy competition is necessary, we must also support each other to collectively build our industry and to help Namibia thrive.”
