Telecommunications giant MTC, in partnership with the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), ICTechHub and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Accelerator Lab, recognised and conferred awards to young Namibian innovators who participated in the Innovation Bazaar, which took place in September in Windhoek.
The Innovation Bazaar, which was established last year by NUST, had 154 innovators who registered this year, with 55 innovative ideas selected.
Out of the 55 selected ideas, 40 innovators presented their ideas, and finally, 13 bright innovators walked away with asward.
The innovators were divided into five significant sessions: Agriculture and Internet of Things; health; finance and E-commerce; communications and media, and education.
The bazaar was hosted virtually and was aimed at bringing innovators and their ideas together as well as connect them to investors, key industry stakeholders, mentors and partners.
According to Melvin Angula, MTC’s chief commercial officer, “Namibia as a country needs to create platforms that encourage young innovators to introduce their innovative ideas to the world.
“Hence we have an innovation centre which we encourage innovators to make use of, and be creative in birthing ideas that will provide smart and effective market solutions,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, NUST’s Professor Heike Winschiers-Theophilus commended MTC and UNDP for making sure that great ideas get out into the market.
“I am appealing to companies like MTC to join the recreation of the innovation space and to bring the digital world and the physical world together,” she said.
Winners at the bazaar included a digital interactive children’s world map, which won best presentation in the education category.
