WINDHOEK

Heavy thundershowers were experienced across the country this weekend, with water pouring down the streets of towns, flooding main roads between towns and causing traffic congestion.

The Namibian Meteorological Service has warned that more widespread thundershowers were still expected today in the Kavango, Zambezi, Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, Khomas and Hardap regions.

Showers are also expected along the coast from tomorrow onwards.

Flood warning

The Windhoek municipality's disaster risk management department has warned residents of possible flash floods.

The Klein Windhoek River and other streams and rivers in Windhoek came down in flood over the weekend and motorists had to turn around at low-water bridges where rivers were flowing too strongly.

Mayor Job Amupanda, councillors and City officials visited flood-affected areas around Windhoek on Sunday to assess the impact.

Amupanda last week said that the City's emergency response team had dealt with 14 flood incidents between December 30 and January 5.

He said a task force composed of different municipal departments had started moving people in low-lying areas and riverbeds to safer areas. A total of 71 households in Havana and eight in Otjomuise have been affected by floods.

Amupanda urged people to avoid areas where floodwater poses a danger.

Otavi deluge

At Otavi, where more than 100 millimetres of rain was measured on Saturday, the Namib Mills warehouse was flooded.

The road between Otavi and Tsumeb was flooded on Saturday morning after heavy rains during the night. It was reported that 145 mm rain fell in the area.

According to the Reën in Namibia Facebook page, 70 mm of rain was measured at Gobabis on Saturday.

Liesl Louw posted that 60 mm of rain was recorded on their plot 13 km west of Okahandja on Saturday, while James Pieters said that 34 mm of rain was measured at Aranos.

Gert Martins said that Farm Alabama in the Leonardville area received 60 mm.

The Orange River reached the ocean at Oranjemund over the weekend, while the Khan River and the Kuiseb River were also in flood.
