WINDHOEK

As momentum builds towards the upcoming Namibia Annual Sports Awards (NASA), corporate companies have pledged their commitment to funding categories in this year’s event.

The likes of MTC, Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), NamPower, Standard Bank, New Era and DebMarine will sponsor the awards.

Corporates make up an intrinsic part of hosting the ceremony, and sharing that sentiment are some of the sponsors who spoke at the event.

MTC’s Fikameni Mathias said this has been a great year for Namibia as athletes have done very well in their respective fields.

“MTC has made a deliberate effort to invest in the sports community and the athletes have been quite ‘notorious’ in their achievements,” he said.

He added that corporate investments can make sports appealing.

Vital

NWR’s Mufaro Nesongo said the company is very proud to be associated with the awards.

“We have been partners for years and will be sponsoring close to N$70 000 in accommodation vouchers to the winners. All I can really say is all the best to the nominees,” he added.

Standard Bank's Isack Hamata further spoke about the importance of development in sports, saying without that aspect - proper fund injection in sports development - the likes of Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi would not be found, or celebrated.

The bank will be sponsoring the development category, with Hamata adding that they picked that category deliberately because it is a vital part of sports.

Big bucks

This year, there will be 20 categories. The prizes for each are as follows: Sports star of the year (MTC – N$200 000); junior sportsman and -woman (MTC - N$50 000); sportsman and -woman with a disability (NamPower - N$100 000); junior sportsman and -woman with a disability NamPower (N$50 000); sports team of the year (DebMarine – N$100 000); coach of the year (DebMarine – (N$30 000); umpire of the year (DebMarine – N$30 000); professional shining star in the diaspora (DebMarine - N$50 000); sports journalist of the year (New Era – N$30 000 – for print, broadcasting and digital, N$10 000 each); lifetime achievement award (NWR/NamPower - N$15 000 and a blazer); chairperson of the year (Namibia Sports Commission – N$10 000); people’s choice sports star of the year (NWR – N$15 000). In the latter category, voting will be done by the public.

The ceremony will be held on 30 October at the Windhoek Gymnasium Hall. To submit entries, visit nscportal.org. Entries close on 4 October.
