Martin reigns supreme at Swakop Rally

Adolf Kaure

Local favourite Allan Martin, along with his navigator Maretha Olivier, emerged victorious as they clinched the 2021 Namcor Swakop Rally, clocking a time of 55:00.

Over 19 vehicles raced through eight stages during the adrenaline-pumping action, which started at the soon-to-be-launched Namcor Service Station in Swakopmund before ending near the Swakop Go Karts Track.

Martin expressed delight at scooping the rally.

“Winning is always nice. It is not everything and people always say I am being modest for saying so, but I had fun. For the first time, I had butterflies and my foot was jumping off the pedal and that is what I see as an exciting rally.

“It’s awesome to win especially when it is a hometown rally,” Martin, who was racing in his Skoda along with his navigator Maretha Olivier, said.

Not just for men

“Without my navigator, I am worth nothing,” he said.

Olivier said that the race was incredible.

“I enjoyed it so much,” she said, adding that navigating is not only for men.

“They can to see that we women can do it too, because we keep winning,” she said.

Martin, who also happens to be the main organiser of the rally, said the event was a success.

“We had a couple of breakages during the day, but many of them still finished – so we are happy with that,” he said.

The rally forms part of the Namibia national championship, of which it was leg two of six spread over two years due to Covid-19 regulations.
