Having been a boxer for most of his life, Namibian boxing sensation Jeremiah ‘Lowkey’ Nakathila has set his sights on restoring the pride of northern footballers.
Football in the country has suffered a huge setback with infighting leading to the halt of league and first-division football.
This has inspired boxer Nakathila to host a tournament that will cater to the needs of aspiring footballers.
The inaugural Jeremiah Nakathila Annual Tournament will be played at Onesi in the Omusati Region.
The aim
“I am a football lover and it is always important for me to see young stars coming up and playing the beautiful game.
“The aim of the tournament is to give youngsters the opportunity to realise their dreams of playing in big tournaments.
“This will also be important as it will improve the talent of future football players in the Omusati Region and the country at large,” Nakathila said.
The boxer added that it is also important to give back to the community that has supported him throughout his career.
He believes in being part of the community and not turning a blind eye to the people that always stood behind him and those who see him as a role model.
“I always believe in sharing the little I have with the community and that is why I decided to sponsor the tournament myself and Judo Investment.”
Appealing for sponsors
Nakathila is appealing to businesses to sponsor the competition.
He is confident that more people can benefit from the competition as long as more people come on board.
“I am appealing to the community, individuals, and business people to assist me with anything they can assist with in order to make this tournament a success.
“The logistics require funds and I am sure that the help of people will make a positive impact,” Nakathila said.
Tournament structure
The winners of the tournament will walk away with N$5 000, a floating trophy and 18 gold medals.
The draw of the tournament will be done on 13 December at the Onesi soccer field.
