He eats, drinks and lives optometry

Arne Schmid was born and raised in Windhoek. He completed high school at Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS) and finished his studies in optometry at the University of Johannesburg in 2018, where he earned awards for best clinical student and exceptional performance in the contact lens clinic. He then started working for W Meyer Optometrists in Windhoek in 2019 and in 2020 he started and finished his degree in pharmaceutical dispensing as a part-time student. At the end of 2020, Schmid became a partner at W Meyer Optometrists.
As a child, Schmid suffered from significant eye problems, which resulted in him having to visit specialists from Cape Town to Munich. This experience sparked a passion for optometry and led him to specialising in paediatrics to help other children who have similar experiences. “My dream is to bring international standards to Namibia,” he says.
His journey at W Meyer Optometrists started in 2019 and since then, he has started making a difference in his patients’ lives by not just changing their vision but also improving their lives with it.
Schmid always wanted to work at W Meyer Optometrists, not only because they had high standards and the latest technology, but also because they specialise in several different fields.
“This is a clinic that is best suited to my personal goals; that is why I was excited to start my career with W Meyer two years ago and became a partner at the end of last year,” he says proudly.
Schmid published his first research article a year after university. He believes his biggest success so far is becoming a partner at W Meyer Optometrists.
He adds that optometry has many different challenges, and no patient is the same. “Therefore, it is important to have the right diagnosis and ideal solutions for unique vision and health-related problems, to improve your vision and ocular health,” he says.
It is important to consult a professional and receive the appropriate information, which could make a major difference in your everyday life.
Schmid adds that optometrists do not just have the ability and knowledge to test your vision and prescribe you a pair of spectacles. They are also able to diagnose children younger than a year, and to treat patients who are blind. Did you know that the most prescribed product by optometrists is artificial tears?
Marc Anthony (American singer) once said: “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Schmid has no desire to change his career, as he loves optometry and all the challenges that come with it. “I look forward to growing further in my field and pursuing my passion for optometry,” he says.
