The Affirmative Repositioning movement has secured the services of a lawyer as it takes the fight to urban and rural development minister Erastus Utoni and the Okahandja municipality to prevent the eviction of large groups of people squatting on municipal land.

The minister and municipality were recently granted a court order giving the go-ahead for the mass evictions in the Five Rand, Ekunde Proper, Ekunde Extension 5 and Veddersdal Extension informal settlements.

“Knowing well, from our experience, how seriously, vigorously and ruthlessly the South West Africa elites take the fight against the poor, our legal team is further strengthened with additional steel in Advocate Tinashe Chibwana,” AR leader Job Amupanda said. Amupanda said the movement would keep to its promise to help the people affected by the order. “We will stand with the landless poor of Okahandja who are under attack by South West Africa (SWAPO) minister Utoni and the Okahandja municipality on behalf of rich millionaires. The community, organised through the Promised Land Residents Association (PLARA) waged a brave fight against the South West Africa corruption in Okahandja,” he said. In their court papers, Utoni and the municipality said the application was filed to curb massive land grabbing occurring at the Garden Town. “They have occupied it on a massive scale and the occupation is still continuing and we have instituted the urgent application as the situation is becoming untenable,” Utoni said.

Utoni further wants the settlers' shacks demolished within 14 days from the issuance of the court order.
