Johannes Swart trounced George Louw to win the under-18 boys singles at the Sanlam Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) junior tennis tournament, which took place in Windhoek at the weekend.

Swart beat Louw 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to be crowned the champion of the competition, while Lisa Yssel defeated Megan Lombardt 2-6, 3-6 to win the girls under-18 singles. Swart also displayed great tennis skills alongside his partner Albertus Brinkman in the under-18 boys double when they beat Sarel Janse van Rensburg and Adam Diggle 6-3, 7-6. The tournament saw under-12, -14, -16 and -18 boys and girls battling it out for top spots.

Coach happy with prospects

NTA development coach Wellington Sibanda said Namibia has a great number of tennis prospects.

“It has been a very exciting tournament and one can actually see that Namibia has so many protentional tennis stars who can eventually become top world competitors. “I am happy with the turnout here because it shows that there is growing interest from Namibians to play the sport,” he said.

Coastal players absent

Sibanda felt the tournament could have been even more exciting if junior players from the coast graced the courts at the weekend. “Like I said, the turnout is good and we are happy, but it has been unfortunate for those who are at the coast who could not make it because of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown.

Next tournament in September

The next NTA tournament is slated for September and Sibanda said he hopes that the situation has improved by then. “It is an uncertain period because of this virus, but I hope that the situation will improve in September. “We want to give an opportunity for all tennis players to showcase their talent.”
