Kauta, Haingura appeal to CAS
Patrick Kauta and Mpasi Haingura have petitioned the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following their disqualification from the presidential election of the Namibia Football Association (NFA).
Kauta, who is the Namibia Premier League (NPL) chairperson, and Haingura, chairperson of the Kavango East First Division, claim they have been unfairly disqualified from standing for the presidency at the elective congress scheduled for tomorrow in Windhoek.
They join former NFA president Frans Mbidi, who also launched an appeal against the Fifa normalisation committee (NC) on Tuesday.
In their affidavit, the two cited the NC-led NFA as the first respondent, while Ranga Haikali, who is standing for the presidency at the elections, is the second.
Kauta was disqualified because he is an active member of the suspended NPL, and also participated in the removal of a sitting president.
Haingura was disqualified for participating in the removal of a sitting president. The appellants say these reasons do not warrant disqualification from contesting for positions within the NFA. The duo in their affidavit further said they met all the constitutional requirements of being older than 23 years and younger than 70, having been involved in football for not less than four years and being nominated by a delegate representing a member.
The affidavit goes on to state that Kauta did not vote to have Mbidi removed from office because he was not entitled to vote.
They further challenge Haikali's eligibility, saying he was not involved in football in any executive capacity for the required minimum of years.
The two further stated that the NFA status says in the absence of an arbitrational tribunal in Namibia, the aggrieved member should approach CAS to seek recourse. They have therefore requested that CAS declare the decision by the NC to bar them from contesting the elections illegal.
