Kapana: OYO’s latest movie coming soon

The Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) is a Namibian trust that aims to create social awareness using the arts.
Over the years, it has developed award-winning movies such as Salute! and Kukuri.
Salute! actor Adriano Visagie won Burkina Faso’s Sotigui award for best actor southern Africa, while Kukuri was nominated for best film southern Africa at the 2020 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards.
For Kapana, director Philippe Talavera resumes his collaboration with Visagie, again playing the lead, George.
Written by award-winners Senga Brockerhoff and Mikiros Garoes, Kapana is a Namibian love story.
Positive and challenging
“We hear so much about negative stories, particularly stories involving gender-based violence, that we wanted to do something different, something more positive, yet educational and challenging for the audience,” Talavera said.
To summarise the plot, he said: “Two lives with almost nothing in common. Two secrets. One place. Can love conquer all?”
So, what do we know about Kapana? Looking at the poster, it’s star-studded: Visagie, Garoes, Dawie Engelbrecht, veteran actresses Felicity Philander and Elize de Wee, as well as Foreversun FH and Albertina Hainane lend their chops to this local feature.
Namibian talent
Talavera said the film also features “amazing newcomers” led by Simon Hanga and Chanwrill Vries.
Kit Hoffmann is the director of photography, while Marelie von Mollendorf is responsible for make-up and Ponti Dikuua and Micheal Pulse for the music.
Editing and post-production credits go to Haiko Boldt and Wojtek Majewski.
“We were lucky to finish principal photography at end of last year”, Talavera said.
“The lockdown affected us, but we could continue with editing, music and post-production. It was hard at times to work within the many restrictions that were imposed on us, but everybody was passionate about the project and worked hard to make it a reality.”
Waiting to premiere
No release date has been set yet, as OYO was waiting for the country to move to stage four of the coronavirus state of emergency regulations before releasing the film.
“A premiere is a celebration of the work done by everybody,” said Talavera, adding that it “didn’t feel right” to release the film with no premiere, or with only 50 people.
“We wanted to wait till we could open it up for more people to see,” he said, adding that the team is aiming to premiere Kapana towards the end of July.
