Job talks tough
Activist Job Amupanda says he will either win or draw against businessman Johnny 'JJD' Doeseb, when they clash at the MTC Knockout Project 'celebrity boxing for change' tournament on 12 October.
Job Amupanda has received a sponsorship of N$50 000 from risk insurance company, Nasria, ahead of his participation at the MTC Knockout Project 'celebrity boxing for change' tournament on 12 October at the Windhoek Country Club Resort. The sponsorship will be used to stage the event. Amupanda will face businessman Johnny 'JJD' Doeseb in the ring.
Nasria is the second corporate to join the campaign, after Namdia sponsored another celebrity participant, Luis Munana, with the same amount.
“When I think of GBV, I think of it in the context of a human body. If you have a headache, you go to the doctor for help to ease the pain, because something happens when your body is not working the way it should.
“Now if you look at the country as a human body, you ought to be concerned if the body of Namibia is not doing well. For that reason we have to take responsibility, as parents, doctors and so forth, and to do something about GBV,” Amupanda said.
He said the project has already succeeded and reached one of its objectives, as it has people talking about gender-based violence.
“The fact that people heard Doeseb will be fighting in a campaign against GBV and that he is training intensively for it, is already a sign that the project is taking effect, because questions are arising about what type of project it is.
“So even if he now decides to chicken out, he has already made a significant contribution to the campaign and that is what people need to understand,” Amupanda teased. Nasria CEO Ndjoura Tjozongoro said they recognise the ill-effects of gender violence on Namibian society.
He said this “dragon” needs to be uprooted by any means necessary.
“We are therefore delighted to partner with MTC in the fight against it and because we believe in putting money where our mouth is, we are rallying behind MTC with the sponsorship towards the staging of the upcoming initiative,” Tjozongoro added.
He added the effects of GBV impact their operations and that they cannot remain silent about this evil, thus their sponsorship.
“We are convinced that Amupanda will portray Nasria's corporate social responsibility in a positive way and bravely defend what he stands for in the ring,” Tjozongoro said.
MTC's Tim Ekandjo thanked Nasria.
“We keep saying that this is a fight against a bigger cause and we will still announce six more pledges from corporates in due time. Please don't get tired of us, as we are only trying to shine a light on this cause.”
Ekandjo added that all 20 local celebrities are receiving intensive training from the MTC Nestor Sunshine Tobias and Salute boxing academies ahead of their bouts.
