Elite runner Lavinia Haitope shrugged off tough competition from Ndeshimona Ekandjo and Beata Naigambo to win the 10km women's race in a time of 35:41.

Her competition Ekandjo ran a time of 36:20 minutes; and Naigambo ran 37:01. In fourth place was Aina Armas with a time of 37:25 and in fifth place, Anna Amatoko with a time of 39:51.

“It was cold and tough but I did it,” said Haitope who also last week Sunday won silver in the first-ever African Beach Games which took place in the Island of Sal in Cape Verde.

In the men's 10km race, Thomas Rainholdt ran a time of 29:58. In second was Kefas Kondjashili with a time of 30:29. Jeremia Shaliaxwe was in third place with a time of 30:37. Fourth spot went to Stephanus Kaudinege with a time of 30:41; fifth placed Jesaya Matheus was disqualified whereas Mathias Simsoni took the spot with a time of 32:27.

The mayor of Windhoek, Muesee Kazapua, also joined the race and received cheers from the crowd.

The Citi Dash event is set to be Namibia's largest participatory sporting event of the year and coincides with International Olympics Day.

The popular race, which took place along Independence Avenue, received an overwhelming response from athletes, young and old, runners from schools around the city, participants from running clubs and the private sector, as well as runners from the general public.

Designed to showcase Namibia's running talent, the route took athletes up and down Independence Avenue, starting at the Zoo Park in the city centre, going down to the Simon de Witt Bridge and returning back to the centre of town.
