Rehoboth will be the place to be for horse racing enthusiasts at the end of March, when the MTC Independence Cup will be staged.

The event will take place at the Rehoboth Horseracing Turf on 27 March.

Horses from different regions are expected to compete over various distances.

The president of the Namibia Horseracing Association (NHRA), Marthinus de Waal, says the event will be exciting.

“We decided to host the MTC Independence Cup next month following consultations with our stakeholders.

“The NHRA held a meeting at Gobabis over the weekend and that is where the idea of hosting the competition in Rehoboth was approved.

“It is going to be a great event filled with plenty of action and excitement,” De Waal said.

Health protocols in place

The NHRA president added that they were waiting for President Hage Geingob to update the nation on the coronavirus measures today before announcing how many people will be allowed to attend the event.

De Waal promised that all health protocols to combat the coronavirus pandemic will be in place.

Prizes

The prize money is N$250 000, while the race includes the Nambred and thoroughbred categories.

Last year, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) granted the Namibia Horseracing Association a sponsorship of N$1.5 million, which will run for a period of three years.

This sponsorship resulted in the NHRA hosting the first MTC Horse Derby at Okahandja on 28 November.

“It is important for us to make use of this sponsorship in the right way and there is no better way than taking competitions to the people.

“I still have two more years as president of the association and I definitely want to make sure that everything works out well for the sport,” De Waal added.

Horse derby at Tsaka

De Waal hinted that the 2021 MTC Horse Derby will take place at Tsaka in the Omaheke Region.

“I know it is still early but the MTC Horse Derby is slated for Tsaka this year.

“We promised to rotate the competition to different venues and that is why it will be moved from Okahandja to Tsaka.”
