Inside Masilingi’s mind
“Am I running too fast? Will I be able to finish the race with this speed?” These are just some of the thoughts local sprinter Beatrice Masilingi has when she runs.

Sprint superstar Beatrice Masilingi, along with her friend and running mate Christine Mboma, will run in Prague, Czech Republic, today at the Josef Odlozil Memorial event.
The two sprinters said they are not aware of who they will run against in the 200 metres.
Asked by Namibian Sun what she thinks about before and during a race, Masilingi said it’s really difficult to think of anything else while she is running, but before the race, she goes through her race plans and goes hard on the blocks, trying to reach the finish line as fast as possible.
“Yes, sometimes I wonder if I’m I running too fast. Will I be able to finish the race with this speed?
“It’s really difficult to think of anything else during that time. But sometimes thoughts of how my favourite runners, Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, will execute the race come to mind,” she said.
Miller-Uibo is sprinter who competes in the 200 and 400m. Fraser-Pryce, on the other hand, competes in the 60, 100 and 200m. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest sprinters of all time.
When idols become rivals
Asked what might happen if she runs against her idol Miller-Uibo at the Tokyo Olympic Games, she said that’s a different story on its own.
“When I’m on the starting block with her, I will only focus on the finishing line. Nothing else,” Masilingi said.
She added that she might try and channel a Jaguar when she runs, but channelling a butterfly is also not a bad idea. “I might channel a lot of things, but let me focus on the beast stuff,” the soft-spoken athlete said with a laughing.
Her shy and reserved countrymate Mboma, who will also run in the race in the 200m as well as at the Tokyo Olympic Games, said she blocks out any distractions and focuses on pushing herself to reach the finish line.
