Next weekend, Namibia will celebrate three decades of independence, so tjil put together some of the events you should check out.
30th Independence Celebrations Concert
MTC, Tafel Lager, Profile Investments, Huawei and Nasria will be hosting a music concert in celebration of Namibia's 30th independence. The concert will take place at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium next Saturday, 21 March. With Huawei announced as the new sponsor on board, there will be giveaways leading up to the big day and during the show. Concertgoers can look forward to performances by Gazza, Sunny Boy, Tiwa Savage, Master KG, D'Banj and more. Tickets are available via Webtickets.
Independence Celebration
After-Party
From the stadium, all roads will lead to the famous Experience Lounge and Cuisine for the Independence Celebration After-Party. DJ Freddy and Jeorge Mix will be on the decks while industry heavyweights Tate Buti, Top Cheri and King Tee Dee will perform. Entrance will be N$50, but will not be fixed all night.
Independence Red Carpet Affair
While the after-party will take place at Experience, the pre-party will take place at Hilton Hotel. Lioness, Lloyd, AsserDeep and Nangula Nanyemba are billed to make an appearance at this flashy event. The dress code is smart casual, but we advise that you come through dripping. Entrance will be free and the event is scheduled to start at 20:00.
'Flashback': An Exhibition of Photographs by Tony Figueira
Saturday, 21 March marks the 30th anniversary of Namibia's independence from South Africa. By showcasing some of legendary photographer Tony Figueira's historical and more contemporary photographs, this exhibition provides a glimpse into the past and demands a moment of reflection. “As with any historic photography collection, these images are fascinating because they create a time capsule.”
Images of protest as well as play create an interesting juxtaposition that combine to reject the notion that it is only through images of abjection and poverty that we can come to understand adversity and pain. A 30th birthday is surely a time for celebration, just as much as it is a time to reinvigorate and rekindle the spirit of protest.
