I’m an African warrior – Nakathila

WINDHOEKSuper featherweight Jeremiah Nakathila said that he is an African warrior and is destined for greatness at yesterday’s press conference held at the MTC headquarters ahead of his fight with America’s Shakur Stevenson.

The two boxers will exchange leather next month to decide who reigns supreme in this competitive division. However, Nakathila has already made his intention of winning the fight clear, saying that he is the king of African boxing and will show the American a thing or two.

“It’s every boxer’s dream to reach this level. I have been training hard. Nicky Natangue and SBK Kaperu have been pushing me hard. We are very serious about this fight,” said the Namibian.

He added that he has watched previous fights of his opponent and that it bored him.

“His opponents just stand in front of him and get beaten. I’m sorry but that’s not me. I’m going to America to beat this guy up. I have been training. I have the likes of South Africa’s Jeff Magagane as a sparring partner as he is a southpaw just like Stevenson.”

Magagane has a record of 17 fights, 12 wins and 5 losses.

Career in boxing takes time

His boxing promoter, Nestor Tobias from MTC Nestor Sunshine Tobias Promotions, said Nakathila will go to Las Vegas to represent the entire African continent.

“We have prepared for this fight for months now and we are going there to win. This is Nakathila’s time to shine. He has been waiting patiently for this moment and we can assure you that he will become Namibia’s fourth world champion. They cannot run away from him now.

“For almost six months, Nakathila has been training. Boxing is a true reflection of life. It’s like a child going to kindergarten, then to high school, then to university and then graduates and finds a job, Nakathila is about to graduate, then he needs to find a job and earn,” Tobias said.

Tobias added that they are aware that Stevenson has also been training.

“Everyone wants to win. We are not undermining him, and hope that he is not undermining us as well. Anything can happen in a fight,” added Tobias.

This will be the 16th world title managed by Tobias, who has been recognised as one of the best promoters in the world.

We are going for a knockout

MTC’s Tim Ekandjo added that Stevenson is one of the darlings of American boxing, but he has never met a boxer like Nakathila.

“We are going to America to knock him out. Hitman (Paulus Moses) fought Raymundo Beltran from Mexico; it was clear that Hitman won the fight. But he didn’t get the fight. So, it’s important not to leave it to the judges, they protect their boxers,” said Ekandjo.

He added that MTC doesn’t invest in boxers for one or two years.

“It took Hitman about seven years to fight for world title. It took Paulus Ambunda about six years. It then took Walter Kautondokwa about seven years as well and now it has taken Nakathila eight years.

“This is Nakathila’s time. He is in a great position. If he wins this fight, he will fight another American champion, Herring, in a space of about two months.

“This is a great moment and we are saying to the nation and to the continent at large to rally behind Nakathila,” added Ekandjo.

Top secret

Nakathila’s camp also announced that their training tactics will be a secret. They added that they will not be posting a lot of videos of the boxer and will also not allow media to come to training to capture videos but will release packaged information so as to avoid giving away too much about the boxer to the Americans.
