Hostel caretaker's rape case ready for trial
The case of a former hostel caretaker charged with the rape of 10 boys at Karundu Primary School in Otjiwarongo over a period of three years from 2013, is ready for trial.
Mervin Nguyapeua faces 32 charges of rape and 27 alternative charges of committing a sexual act involving 10 boys younger than 16, between the years of 2013 and 2015 when he was employed as caretaker at the hostel.
The 48-year-old Nguyapeua made another appearance before High Court Judge Nate Ndauendapo on Thursday, when the rape and sexual abuse case was allocated to Judge Alfred Siboleka for trial. As per a court order issued on Thursday, the case was remanded until tomorrow for both the trial judge (Siboleka), State Advocate Palmer Khumalo and the accused's government-funded defence lawyer Milton Engelbrecht to decide on the date of the start of the trial.
Nguyapeua remains in police custody at the Windhoek Central Correctional Facility's trial-awaiting section until 23 January this year, when he returns to High Court for the announcement of the trial date. According to a summary of substantial facts contained in the charge sheet, he allegedly committed the offences when he lived at the hostel of the Karundu Primary School and was regarded as a father figure by learners who stayed at the hostel.
